Angers is France’s greenest city (UNEP award 2015). Plants and greenery abound throughout the town and have always been a pillar of the local economy. 4 500 people work in this sector.
Plant life is an inherent part of Angers’ identity. Accounting for more than 2,000 jobs, Angers is the horticultural capital of France. The Anjou region is also reputed for the diversity of things grown here: fruit trees, market gardening, seeds, and of course its vineyards!
International institutions and organisations
Angers is home to a number of internationally-reputed institutions and organisations, such as Végépolys, a global centre of excellence, and the Community Plant Variety Office, which is an EU agency. Key international events such as Sival or the Loire Valley Wine Trade Fair make Angers a pivotal meetup for anybody working in the plant sector. The International Horticultural Congress will be held in Angers in 2022.
European academic leader
With 25 courses and 2,500 students, Angers offers the widest choice of plant science courses in France, and leads the way in Europe for academic opportunities in this field. An official roadmap has been established to ensure that Angers achieves European leader status by 2020. The Research, Training and Innovation plan (RTI) was introduced in February 2014. Named Objectif Végétal, the programme is coordinated by the University of Angers and seeks to accelerate the growth of the region’s cluster.
