> Haarlem (The Netherlands)
Haarlem is the capital of the North Holland province situated twenty kilometres west of Amsterdam, and has a population of 150,000. It is reputed as being a safe and pleasant town and a great place to live. The historical centre is extremely well preserved and features many listed buildings such as the town hall, which dates back to the Middle Ages, and St Bavo cathedral with its famous Müller organ that Mozart played when he was 10 years old. There are also some big museums: the Teyler museum, which is the oldest in the Netherlands, and the Frans Hals museum where the works of illustrious artists are displayed. Breweries, ship building and the textile industry previously made Haarlem one of the most prosperous towns in the Netherlands. The town has been twinned with Angers since 1964.

Osnabrück is situated in North West Germany between the Wiehen hills and the Teutoburg forest. It is the third largest town in Lower Saxony with 166,000 inhabitants, set within a wider urban area with a total population of 360,000. The city has a vibrant cultural scene, with highlights including May Week, the European media art festival, the African festival and the Christmas market. With over 21,000 students, the town has a young population and strong international links. Osnabrück has been twinned with Angers since 1964.

Situated north of Tuscany and ten kilometres from the sea, Pisa is built on the banks of the river Arno, the largest body of water in the region. It has been twinned with Angers since 1982 and counts 89,000 inhabitants in the town itself, and a total population of 190,000 including nearby towns. With three universities, it is also a major European research centre. 50,000 students contribute to the town’s young and dynamic vibe. Famous the world over for its leaning tower which is one of the monuments on the Square of Miracles – a UNESCO world heritage site since 1987 – Pisa has a rich history dating back over the ages. It also has biggest airport in Tuscany.

Situated between Manchester and Liverpool, the Borough of Wigan is a vibrant and friendly municipality encompassing a number of towns and villages in North West England. It has been twinned with Angers since 1988. The Borough of Wigan is one of ten boroughs in Greater Manchester which has a total population of 2.6 million inhabitants. Wigan is famous for its rugby league team, pies and local breweries. The town has also produced a number of famous names, such as the singer George Formby, pop band The Verve and lead singer Richard Ashcroft, and actor Ian McKellenn.

Bamako is the capital of Mali and is divided into six communes, with a total population of 1.8 million. Set in the heart of West Africa, Mali is a landlocked country with a surface of 1,241,300 km² – twice the size of France. Angers has had close ties with Bamako since 1974 and the towns share friendly and supportive links. In 1985, Angers was the first town in France to contribute 0.5% of its annual budget to a cooperative fund. In 1997, new impetus was created when the Maison du Partenariat was opened in Bamako. And since 1999, Angers Loire Métropole earmarks 0.3% of its annual investment funds for development aid projects.

Yantai is a tourist town and seaside resort situated right at the tip of the Shandong peninsula looking out towards Korea and Japan. It has a population of 7 million and covers 14,000 m² with 900 km of river banks. It is a booming region for investment and counts more than 8,000 foreign businesses. Its key sectors are agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture, farming and food production, and wine making. With more than 15,000 vineyards, Yantai is China’s biggest wine region and produces almost 50% of the country’s wines. It also yields lots of fresh produce, with 213,000 hectares of fruit orchards and 60,000 hectares of vegetable crops. The Institut Confucius des Pays de la Loire was opened in Angers in November 2009.

Austin is the capital of the State of Texas. Situated on the Colorado river, it has established a reputation in the United States as a pioneering high-tech hub and is nicknamed Silicon Hills. Tech giants located there include Dell, Apple, Freescale, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, AMD, Texas Instruments and National Instruments. Austin is the administrative capital of Texas, a state with 26 million inhabitants (2014), and the 14th most populated city in the USA with 885,400 residents. Austin is home to a number of universities, including the massive main campus of the University of Texas (50,000 students). The town also owes its reputation to the success of South by Southwest, one of the biggest US tech and culture festivals.

Södertälje is part of the County of Stockholm and located 30 km from the capital city. It has a population of 84,172 making it the country’s 20th largest town. Södertälje has long industrial history. Firms there include Scania’s head office and pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. Björn Borg was born there on 6th June 1956. Relations between Angers and Södertälje began when truck manufacturer Scania opened a factory in Angers in 1990-1991. The first truck left the factory on 3rd June 1992. Employees from Angers regularly travel to Sweden for training courses.
